Ash Tree Beetle

Q: I have heard there is a dangerous beetle that is coming in to the area via firewood that people bring in from outside the area. Supposedly it kills ash trees. Can you tell us more? Thank you

A: Yes, there is a very aggressive insect called the emerald ash borer that has devastated ash trees in Michigan and parts of Ohio, and has spread to other areas as well.

It has been spread via firewood transportation, plus it is able to fly on its own, but not very far.

There have been several quarantined counties in Ohio and neighboring states prohibiting transporting firewood or nursery stock out of them to try to reduce the spread of this terrible insect.

Here is a link at which you can find the latest information.
