Matching Grass in the Lawn

Q: I am planning to power seed my lawn to fill in bare spots and increase thickness.

How can I determine the type of grass I currently have so the overseeding will blend in with the old? Thanks,
Gerry

A: If you're a good detective, you can page through a book with pictures of grasses and identify your lawn's composition that way.

Ask your local garden center or nursery what types of grasses are typical in your area.

Chances are your lawn contains grasses common to your locale, and this will will help you narrow down your search.

Or, you can take a sample of your lawn either to your local garden center or nursery for them to examine, or ask a lawn care expert to identify your lawn's content (you may have to pay for this service).
