Harvey, the Civil War Dog Hero, statue on Public SquareThere is a new addition to Cleveland's Public Square just SW of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. It's a statue of a heroic dog from the Civil War named Harvey.
Statue of Harvey the Dog on Public Square
Harvey was a Bull Terrier that traveled with the 104th Ohio Volunteer Infantry-known as the Barking Dog Regiment because they had several dogs attached. Harvey became part of the unit in 1862 when his owner, Daniel M. Stearns of Wellsville, Ohio, joined the regiment.
Both Stearns and Harvey had had previous military experience with the Pennsylvania Reserve. In November 1862 Stearns was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, and he proudly fitted Harvey with a special collar with a nameplate that read, "I am Lieutenant D.M. Stearn's dog, whose dog are you?" Following the war, Harvey became an emotional support animal for Stearns, who struggled with undiagnosed PTSD.
You are cordially invited to be part of Scoop 2025, a fun-filled and educational event for senior dogs, on Sunday, September 28, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Oak Grove picnic area in the Brecksville Reservation. The proceeds from The Scoop support the programs of The Sanctuary for Senior Dogs, a nonprofit organization in continuous operation for the past 25 years, dedicated to the rescue, adoption, and lifelong care of abandoned senior dogs.
This year the Scoop, a unique event in our area, will offer a wide variety of attractions for old dogs and the people who love and care for them. The afternoon of fun will feature the Old Dog Olympics, an agility course paced just for old dogs sponsored by Woof Wise Dog Training; contests for old dogs and their friends; group and individual photos by the incomparable Portraits by Martha; great raffle prizes; vegan refreshments; vendors providing goods and services of interest to old dog lovers; paw print paintings; and, of course, lots of old dogs out to enjoy the day.
One of the highlights of the day will be a parade of special senior dogs, some looking for their very own homes, some adopted from the Sanctuary, and some Forever Foster dogs, enjoying their golden years surrounded by comfort and love. The Scoop focuses attention on the benefits and joys of senior dogs, loyal and loving companions too often abandoned in the twilight of their lives.
You can participate in the Scoop 2025 on three levels: sponsor, vendor, donor. Thank you for helping to support our work with abandoned old dogs, giving them the second chance that all companion animals so richly deserve. We look forward to seeing you at the Scoop 2025!
