A little bit ago, I shared an article offering a handful of nice, little known spots in the area to catch a sunrise at different times of the year. I'm a sucker for a beautiful, fiery sunset too and while we don't have an ocean or mountain peaks to add drama to the sunset, we do have a wonderful great lake that provides nice opportunities to enjoy nature's beauty.
But if you can't make it to a shoreline spot, we've also a few hidden gem locales in the area that I like to hit up for a sunset view and pictures.
Astorhurst Park - The Bedford Reservation
This spot is a former golf course acquired by the Cleveland Metro Parks several years ago; it's been mostly allowed to go back to its natural state. The old cart path is now a hiking path through the park and it includes a couple of excellent spots to catch a sunset at almost any time of the year.
Liberty Park - Tinkers Creek Area
Located in Streetsboro, this park is the former Tinkers Creek State Park now managed by Summit Metro Parks. It includes a lake with a rustic hiking path encircling it. The orientation of the lake makes it a great spot to catch a sunset and the hiking path makes it easy to follow the setting sun over the course of the year.
Longwood ParkThis community park is located in Macedonia and includes a tree lined pond, ballfields, a playground, and a couple of short-ish hiking trials. Uniquely, the trees and pond provide an interesting sunset experience once the leaves are down in the fall and then throughout the winter.
Drone ShotsFinally, here are a few selections featuring the Cleveland skyline at sunset captured by a drone hovering at about 350' and roughly 20 miles to the southeast. From that location, the sun approaches the city up until the summer solstice and then works its way back to its journey to the winter solstice.
And here's one final shot: a beautiful river sunset in winter, ruined by the author's ugly mug.
So, if you enjoy a good sunset, check out some of these spots when conditions are good. Or be adventurous and explore your own neck of the woods; you'd be surprised at what you might find!See more about Brad Nellis
