Getting ready for Golf

Q. We were just talking about how golf season is not that far away. I have not done anything exercise-wise this winter but want to be ready to hit the links when the weather breaks.

Can you suggest a regimen of exercises specifically geared toward golfers? I have to admit we ride in a cart instead of walk (we are not kids anymore) but the club swinging, bending for the ball and so on need some preparation.

A. First of all, I will preface my remarks by admitting I am not a golfer, and being so devoted to cardiovascular fitness, I find it a shame that you ride in a cart instead of walking.

That said, though, my advice for preparation for the season includes a great deal of resistance work using free weights and/or bars with plates, stretching for flexibility along with core and stability work. The weights you use do not need to be heavy. You will build your lean muscle mass, strength and endurance through many repeats.

Find a trainer or fitness instructor to show you the proper form for dead lifts, presses, frontal raises and squats. You will need to work all of your muscle groups - and don't skimp on the triceps exercises.

The more flexible you become - full range of motion in all joints - the better quality of your functionality and the less chance of injury from your golfing. And, of course, we need the strong core muscles for lifting, bending and swinging.

The best way to strengthen your "power house" along with improving your balance is to purchase and use the large stability ball. Refer to my "ball article"

As always, check with your own healthcare professional before undertaking any diet or exercise program.
