Cuyahoga Community College
Performing Arts
2008-2009 season of performances
in music, dance and jazz

Cuyahoga Community College Performing Arts announces its 2008-2009 season of performances in music, dance and jazz. A premiere performing arts series in Cleveland, Tri-C showcases arts and cultural performances, Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland, Showtime at High Noon, The Song is You!, as well as offerings sponsored through a continuing partnership with DANCECleveland.

New this season is the Piano Recital Series, the only one of its kind in the area, featuring internationally acclaimed and rising young stars.

One of the world's foremost modern dance companies, Lar Lubovitch Dance Company comes to the Ohio Theatre on November 1 at 8 p.m. as the company celebrates its 40th anniversary with a national tour. Hailed by The New York Times as "one of the ten best choreographers in the world," Lar Lubovitch's company will present masterful works that include Concerto Six Twenty-Two. This performance is co-presented with DANCECleveland.

The fusion of jazz and world music by the instrumental ensemble Project is sure to thrill Clevelanders at the Ohio Theatre on November 14 at 8 p.m. as the group has around the globe. All alums of the Cleveland Institute of Music, Project peppers a classical repertoire of original compositions with elements of hip-hop and popular music.

Presented by Tri-C in 2002, Laurie Anderson returns to the Ohio Theatre at 8 p.m. on February 7 for a solo performance of The End of the Moon. A work that Anderson describes as journalistic in essence, documents the results of her experiences as artist-in-residence with NASA. Anderson's 90-minute monologue is described by New York Magazine as "essentially a hushed meditation on the imponderables that inhabit space, both near and far."

Two performances by Ballet Hispanico on February 20 at 8 p.m. and February 21 at 2 p.m. will fill the stage of the Ohio Theatre with dazzling dance and sizzling music. Ballet Hispanico fuses Latin dance, classical ballet and modern dance to create a new style of dance with lots of theatricality and passion. This performance is co-presented with DANCECleveland.

New Orleans' own Hot 8 Brass Band on March 6 at the Ohio Theatre at 8 p.m. infuses the funk and energy that have made the music of the Big Easy loved around the world. Featured by Spike Lee in the documentary, When the Levees Broke, expect a performance by Hot 8 that is complete with second line and like no other performance during our season.

The all new Piano Recital Series features 3:30 p.m. Sunday performances at First Baptist Church, 3630 Fairmount Road, Cleveland. Recitals by internationally acclaimed pianists include: Konstantin Soukhovetski on November 16, a rising young Russian pianist known for captivating audiences and first prize winner of the 2007 New Orleans International Piano Competition; Christopher Falzone on December 7, recent winner of the Gilmore Young Artist Award; Pierre Réach on February 15, one of the best interpreters of the Goldberg Variations; and Cleveland's own critically-acclaimed Daniel Shapiro on March 15.

Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland presents The Song Is You! that features the work of composers and songwriters from the great American Songbook. The series is conceived, written and hosted by Bill Rudman, who is joined by jazz pianist Joe Hunter and others. The Song Is You! is a musical love affair that takes you on an entertaining, multimedia journey filled with music. This year's series will focus on the work of Hoagy Carmichael, James Van Heusen and others.

Tri-C's "Showtime at High Noon" series returns this season with performances by Project, Ballet Hispanico, Hot 8 Brass Band, Tri-C JazzFest Preview and others. These noontime performances are open to the public and are presented free of charge at Playhouse Square's Ohio Theatre.
