Ships at Navy Week in Cleveland

Six ships of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Coast Guard and Royal Canadian Navy are participating in Cleveland Navy Week and the Commemoration of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 and The Star-Spangled Banner August 27-September 4, 2012.

A celebration of the nation’s sea services, Cleveland Navy Week and the Commemoration of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 is one of the signature events held across the United States providing Northeast Ohio residents an opportunity to meet Sailors, Coast Guardsmen and Marines, as well as witness the modern capabilities of today’s maritime services firsthand that help preserve our national security and the American way of life.

The frigate USS De Wert (FFG 45), the coastal patrol ship Hurricane (PC 3), US Brig Niagara (non-military), the USCG cutter Katmai Bay and the Royal Canadian Navy’s coastal defense vessels HMCS Summerside and HMCS Moncton were open for general public visitation.

USS De Wert is named after Medal of Honor Recipient US Navy Hospitalman Richard De Wert.

De Wert'smission is to provide air, submarine, and surface protection for carrier battle groups, underway replenishment forces, amphibious groups, and convoys. Her unique combination of modern sensors and advanced weapon systems allow this ship to fight and survive in the highly complex threat environment of today.

USCGC Katmai Bay (WTGB 101)

The US Coast Guard Cutter Katmai Bay is a 140 foot Bay-class Icebreaking Tug home ported at the US Coast Guard Sector in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, located in the Ninth Coast Guard District. Katmai Bayperforms Icebreaking, Homeland Security, Law Enforcement, and Public Affairs missions, and Light House Projects.
