Preserving Photos and Videos
Advice from Jill Ellen Shankar

Q. We have a lifetime of memories in our photo albums and even some 8mm tape and some VHS tapes.

I am worried that they are not being preserved very well. What would you suggest to keep these treasures?

A. Go to your local camera store and ask them what you've just asked me. Show them how many photos and tapes you have, and ask about other storage options relative to cost, equipment, etc.

Another topic to discuss is how you're handling photos and video now.

Do you have a digital camera, where you can delete photos you don't like and store the others efficiently? Make sure that you aren't faced with this problem again in ten years.

While this process may be costly initially, you may find the investment to be worthwhile, from both a preservation standpoint, and a space saving one.
