The Bichon Frise breaks into the "Top 10" this year in Cleveland, yet has never ranked in the Top 20 nationally.

Despite Dachshunds ranking as the sixth most popular dog in the nation, this breed takes a back seat to other breeds among local residents. The Dachshund ranks 18th in Cleveland.

Last year in Cleveland, the Bulldog, Miniature Pinscher and Rottweiler were ranked eighth, ninth and 10th, respectively. In 2005, all three breeds were replaced by the Miniature Schnauzer (now fifth), Shih Tzu (ninth) and Bichon Frise (10th).

Among the least registered in Cleveland are the Norwegian Elkhound, Chow Chow, Otterhound and Polish Lowland Sheepdog.

"It's particularly interesting to see the Bichon Frise and Pug break into the 'Top 10' in Cleveland," said AKC Spokesperson Gail Miller. "These lively breeds make wonderful pets for a variety of lifestyles, from city to country living."

The American Kennel Club(r), founded in 1884, is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of purebred dogs. The AKC maintains the largest registry of purebred dogs in the world, oversees the sport of purebred dogs in the United States, and along with its nearly 5,000 licensed and member clubs, educates the general public about responsible dog ownership.

More than 16,000 competitions for AKC-registered purebred dogs are held under AKC rules each year including conformation, agility, obedience, rally, tracking, herding, lure coursing, coonhound events, hunt tests, field and earthdog trials.

Affiliate AKC organizations include the AKC Canine Health Foundation, AKC Companion Animal Recovery and the AKC Museum of the Dog.
