Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet
by Jamie Ford
Review by Jean Walsh

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet is a wonderful story of love and family - a bit of Romeo and Juliet - only the cast is Henry (Chinese) and Keiko (Japanese).

It takes place in Seattle in the 40's where two young people meet. Henry faces conflict with his father regarding having a Japanese friend.

Along the way they are befriended by a jazz saxophone player. But as fate would have it Keiko and her family become victims of the Japanese internment which took place during the Second World War. Time goes by - 40 years - and Henry tries to find the sweet among the bitter.

A great story of blending love of humans regardless of race or creed. A definite enlightening read of sad times and hope.
