Women's Health Answers
From Dr. Pamela Graber
Director, Anthem's Healthy Woman Program

What do women need to know about hysterectomy?

Hysterectomies have been used to treat such conditions as cancer, endometriosis, uterine fibroids and dysfunctional uterine bleeding. Today, women need to be aware of exciting new technologies that offer alternatives to hysterectomy, including medications, laser surgery and less invasive procedures that can halt bleeding and reduce or remove endometriosis and fibroids.

The alternative not only preserves the uterus, which is important for women of childbearing age, they also substantially reduce hospital stays and recovery time.

An estimated 16 percent of all hysterectomies are performed inappropriately. So it's especially important for women to talk with their doctor about appropriate alternatives to hysterectomy.
