What is a Physiatrist?

Q. I have heard the term Physiatrist lately - is that the same as a Physical Therapist?

A. A physiatrist is a medical doctor who has specialized in "Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation".

You can often find Physiatrists working in rehab hospitals with brain injured patients or spinal cord patients. Many other Physiatrists do EMG measurements (muscle testing) in their offices and many are located in hospital settings.

Physical Therapists are sometimes called "physiotherapists" in other parts of the world like Europe and Canada!
