Seasonal Affective Disorder
Answered by Kenneth G. Alexander

Q. Is there really such a thing as being affected by too much darkness?

I always feel better in the sunlight vs. the winter months when it is dark so much earlier and longer. Friends have suggested this is some kind of "syndrome". What do you say?

A. What you describing is commonly referred to as "Seasonal Affective Disorder", or SAD.

Some typical symptoms include: mild depression, lack of energy, increased need for sleep and a craving for sweets which often results in weight gain.

People, who are experiencing these symptoms often, find relief by regular exposure to "full spectrum light". These devices can be purchased in local health food stores, or through the internet.
