Doesn't like pet anymore
Advice from Kenneth G. Alexander

Q. I have a dog and have had him for over 6 years. I have always loved animals in general and dogs specifically. I am 64.

All of a sudden I don't like the dog. I still take care of him but grudgingly. I see other people with their pets and it makes me sick. I don't want an animal in my house or anywhere around me. But I know I never felt like this before.

I have had a pet since I was about 5 years old - never been without one. it just makes me crazy to even see one. What happened?

Should I try to work through it? (How?) or give away what used to be my best friend? Thank you.

A. If your feelings of dislike towards the animal are causing it any form of neglect, I strongly suggest you give it to your friend ASAP.

I believe that both you and the dog will benefit from this "trial separation".

The dog will get appropriate care, and you will have the undisturbed opportunity to "sort out" your current negative feelings.
