Depression vs "The Blues"
Advice from Kenneth G. Alexander

Q. How do you recognize depression vs. feeling down or "the blues"? Thanks!

A. Everyone from time to time experiences what you refer to as "the blues".

This is usually categorized as feelings of low energy, motivation, very mild hopelessness, and at times, some difficulty concentrating. In the majority of cases, these episodes last for about a week.

In the case of depression, one will also experience eating and sleeping problems, low self esteem and sometimes suicidal ideation. These symptoms also last for a longer period of time.

If you continue to question what you are experiencing, I strongly suggest you contact you physician for a closer look.
