Seeing Therapist in
Social Situation
Advice from Kenneth G. Alexander

Q. I was shocked to see my therapist in a social situation. I just wasn't expecting him to be there.

I spent the whole night avoiding him and then we finally were "introduced" and he shook my hand like he didn't know me and said it was nice to meet me.

He was introduced by his first name and I didn't know what to call him, so I just didn't say anything. What is the proper way to handle this?

A. All ethical mental health professionals must ensure their patients confidentially at all costs. Actually, the scenario you describe (and the uneasy feelings) is very common.

As you experienced, your therapist acted in the best professional manner. In the case of "names", you may want to discuss this issue with your therapist and see what he finds appropriate.
