War Memories
Advice from Kenneth G. Alexander

Q. All of this talk about the war in Iraq is bringing up very bad memories of my time in the war.

I hadn't thought about any of that for years and now I think about it all the time. Is this normal? Shouldn't I be over it by now?

A. What you are describing occurs from time to time with veterans, who thought their war experiences were behind them. For people like you, the constant media coverage of our present war has "re-opened" some very unpleasant memories, which appear to be having an impact on your ability to function as you once did.

It is helpful that you are able to have an awareness of this, and are looking for answers. Some veterans (or anyone who have experienced a severe trauma) can develop what is referred to as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). There is a possibility that this could be happening to you.

If these "memories" that you are now experiencing are having a significant impact on you ability to function in a healthy manner, I urge you to see a psychiatrist who specializes in this area. Start with your primary care physician.
