Sudden Change in Diet
Answered by Kenneth G. Alexander

Q. Hello. When my children were very young they would go for days on end refusing to eat anything but peanut butter or whatever the "mood" of the day was. Now my husband, 77 years old, is starting to do the same thing.

Just bologna sandwiches for a week. Just meat loaf for a week. With the children I could make sure they got vitamins and nutrition, but what do I do about him?

And for goodness sake why would a sane, healthy "normal" adult person start doing this? Thank you very much.

A. The sudden dietary change by your husband can be for a variety of reasons. It may be helpful for you to examine the fact that he is eating regularly vs. what he is eating.

From the information you presented, it does not sound as if he is eating "junk food" all the time. A daily multivitamin may also help ease your concerns.

If he begins to experience health problems as a result of this diet, I would recommend the two of you see his physician and discuss it with him/her.
