Adoption of
Granddaughter's Baby
Answered by Kenneth G. Alexander

Q. My sweet little grandaughter just told us she is having a baby -she's only 17!

She is putting the baby up for adoption. I cannot bear to think my great-grandbaby will be living with strangers.

How do you feel about grandparents (we are in our 60's) adopting?

My husband says it might be the right thing for the baby but the wrong thing for my grandaughter. I don't see how it could be bad for anyone.

What do you think?

A. This is your granddaughter's unborn child.

If she feels that adoption by another family besides her own is in the best interest of the child, the most reasonable thing for you to do is support her on this VERY difficult decision.

I believe that your consideration to adopt the child yourselves, although a caring gesture, will unfortunately open up a new set of problems/issues that will have a significant impact on this child (as well as its mother).
