Personal Space
Answered by Kenneth G. Alexander

Q. Can you help me understand "personal space". My daughter-in-law keeps telling me I am invading her "personal space" - I don't even know what that means.

I think it is her way of saying "go away I don't like you or need you" but my husband says we just don't understand the ways of young people. Fine.

Please help me understand. Thank you. P.S. I don't interfere.

A. The term "personal space" in most cases refers to the emotional, psychological (and sometimes physical) closeness or distance between two individuals.

In the case of your daughter-in-law, she may be feeling pressured or slightly intimidated by things you say or do.

One of the best ways to find out is to ask her (without being defensive or judgmental).

Once you have the answer, it can allow both of you to have a "healthy boundaries", and a better relationship.
