When is Counseling Required?
Answered by Kenneth G. Alexander

Q. Just how do I know if a problem requires counseling?

I come from a "tough-it-out" and "suck-it-up" kind of family, but sometimes I think I would like to talk to someone or at least get some objective feedback, but I'm never sure if this is worth a professional or not.

A. If you desire to talk with someone to help process a particular problem or situation, GO FOR IT!

Old "family rules" such as "toughing it out" or "sucking it up" in this case, are more a hindrance than a help.

The key issue here is not whether a professional is worth it, the question is "are you worth it"?
