Curling Nails
and Hammer Toes

Q. Trying to help grandmother with a problem. She won't go to the doctor about this. Second toenails (second toes are "hammers") are curling under. Looks like a sideways "C" when facing the feet.

How can we cut them to grow straight and not curl. They are trimmed to an appropriate length. At the rate they're going we fear they may begin to split down the middle. Will appreciate your advice. Thanks!

A. There may be increased pressure on the toenails of the contracted toes due to walking directly on the nails. Increased pressure increases the thickness of the nail.

She may also have a very common fungal infection in the toenails causing them to curl. Cutting them in different ways will most likely not prevent them from curling under.

Taking her to a qualified Podiatrist may be the best option for her. A Podiatrist can trim the nails to relieve pressure, or possibly remove them if necessary. Additionally treatment options for her "hammer toes" can be discussed.
