Diabetic Socks
& Electric Blanket

Answered by Tamara Kurtis Randall, MS, RD, LD

Q. I know Diabetes can affect your feet BUT I see ads for socks for diabetics to wear. What's the difference between these and regular socks? Thanks.

A. The main difference is that the advertised socks usually do not have a seam at the toe that could cause a blister or sore. In most cases, however, regular cotton socks will work just fine.

Q. Why does my new electric blanket say "not to be used by Diabetics?"

A. High blood glucose can cause loss of some of the sensation in the feet and legs.

If you would like to use an electric blanket, it is safest to use it to warm the bed before you get in it, but turn it off when you get in bed for the night.
