Atkins Diet
& other Food Questions

Answered by Tamara Kurtis Randall, MS, RD, LD

Q. Is the Atkins diet safe for Diabetics?

A. Any "diet" that instructs you to eliminate most foods from a food group is a bad idea - for people with or without diabetes.

The Atkins diet is particularly of concern because it replaces low-calorie carbohydrate foods with high-calorie, high-fat foods that are specifically discouraged in diabetes meal planning.

Q. Do you suggest buying special Diabetic products or adapting "normal food"?

A. People with diabetes do not need to purchase special foods.

Foods marketed to people with diabetes are usually more expensive and often not that nutritionally different from a traditional product.

Stick to the basics - whole grains, fruits, vegetables, lean meats and dairy products.
