Controlling Your Diabetes

If you have diabetes and are an Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield member, you may consider participating in the Diabetes Care Program. This program is a resource to help you control your diabetes.

Whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, the Diabetes Care Program encourages you to follow these nationally recommended guidelines to not only improve your current health, but also to help you try to avoid serious health problems in the future (Source: American Diabetes Association):

  • Keep routine appointments with your doctor. As your health care partner, your physician will help you manage your diabetes.
  • Have your blood pressure checked regularly.
  • Monitor your blood sugar regularly and ask your doctor about having the hemoglobin A1c test at least twice a year.
  • Check your feet daily for redness, sores or numbness.
  • Have yearly dilated eye exams (not the same as a vision test).
  • Have a yearly cholesterol check.
  • Have a yearly kidney function test.
  • Have a yearly flu shot.
  • Don't smoke. If you smoke, make plans to quit.
  • Follow a meal plan tailored to your personal tastes and nutritional needs
  • Take your medications as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Stay physically active.
  • Remember that high blood sugar can cause serious problems - even if you feel fine
