Ask the Dermatologist Face Issues Steven J. Taub, M.D.
Q. Hi. For the past 3 days, I have spot cases of swelling on my lips. It started from just one red spot on my lower lip and has now spread. Prior to the swelling, I experienced a "tightness" in my lips (I have chronic dryness and use Vaseline religiously) and now it seems as if the lip actually split, swelled and has become red with a slightly burn sensation. What can this be? And how can I soothe the patches of red swelling? Please help.
Answer: It is difficult to say exactly what it is. It could be a photo reaction from the sunlight. I would suggest that you see a dermatologist as soon as possible for this condition.
Q. While recently having a facial, it was suggested that I purchase a product containing "integral DNA". I was told it would improve the appearance of my crow's feet and lip lines. At $87.00, I was hesitant. I am wondering if products such as this really do any good? Thank you.
Answer: I don't think that over the counter products do much good for wrinkles.
Q. I am a 50 yr. old male who has developed small spider veins on the bridge of my nose. It causes an appearance of a red mark there. Besides possible laser surgery, is there anything else I can do for this?
Answer: Hyfrecation can be used to remove these lesions other then laser.
Q. How do you treat a surface scratch that won't fade on a face. It happened some time ago, but you can still see a red line. Is there a special ointment? Do you think it fades in time ? I am concerned about a scar. Thank you.
Answer: To treat a surface scratch that won't fade and happened some time ago and that you can see a red line, there is no special ointment for this. It should take time to fade, but you probably should see your dermatologist just to be certain.
