Ask the Dermatologist Steven J. Taub, M.D.
Q. I have had a brown rash underneath my arms for as long as I can remember. Could you tell me what you think it is. I put diaper rash stuff on which helps a little bit. It is so bad that it is hard to shave. So please help me.
Answer: It may be a hyperpigmentation or increased pigment from having irritation. I suggest you see a dermatologist for this skin change.
Q. I usually lay in a tanning bed about 15 times a year. Usually twice a week. Anyway....I have a mole on my upper right shoulder. I've had it ever since I can remember. I went to the dermatologist last year just because I get paranoid about things. It is a rather big mole with a few brown dots in it. He said that although it was big, it was normal and those dots were hairs growing into the skin instead of out. He told me to start covering my moles with band-aids when I lay in a tanning bed. He also used this device "thing" when looking at my mole. Could he actually see inside the mole with that? Also....is covering my moles with band-aids okay to do when tanning?
Answer: There are also new and very expensive machines that help people or examine moles. I am not quite sure if your dermatologist used that particular machine. Covering your moles with a band-aid is not a problem, however one should really re-evaluate whether or not tanning is the best thing for them since we do know that tanning could cause skin cancer and pre-mature aging of the skin.
Q. I have a problem where my scalp starts to itch intensely as I first start to sweat (like exercising), then the itching reduces as I continue to sweat. My scalp only seems to itch when I begin to sweat. Is there anything I can do to eliminate the itching.
Answer: Probably you should see your dermatologist to make sure that there is no skin dermatitis that is producing the itching after you start sweating.
Q. I have Nummular Eczema, and I was wondering what over the counter creams or anything that I could buy to help rid this rash and then what are the best moisturizers to use to help prevent this rash from returning? Also how long does it take for this rash to clear up? And my last question is does a suntan show up as dots on my skin if i was to go in the sun with this rash?
Answer: There are no over the counter medications that would get rid of nummular eczema. There are no better moisturizers. It varies among
different patients as to how long this rash would take to clear up. You are asking about a suntan showing up as dots on ones skin. These areas may get darker or may get lighter.
Q. I am a Psoriasis suffer for and currently experiencing my worst breakout ever. I've been taking steroids and my body has just become immune to it. My question is with regard to a medication called EXOREX. What is your professional opinion about the results of this medication? Thanks.
Answer: I have never heard of Exorex ointment. A dermatologist can treat the area where it may totally resolve.
