Ask the Dermatologist Steven J. Taub, M.D.
Q1. What is your opinion on tanning? What are the benefits and dangers? Does tanning affect physical performance?
Answer: Tanning is bad for you. It's that simple. I would not recommend tanning. It does cause wrinkles and a possibility of skin cancer. Tanning itself should not affect anyone's physical performance.
Q2. I have had psoriasis for 20 years. Tanning really helps me during the winter months. Is tanning still dangerous if I use suntan lotion of SPF 30?
Answer: The answer to that question is that tanning still has bad effects even though you are using suntan lotion with SPF-30.
Q3. Is it safe to apply sunscreen lotion in the delicate eye area? I have been using a face sunscreen around my eyes (eyelid and under the eye) for about a year without any problems. However, I was just told by a cosmetic counter clerk to never put sunscreen around my eyes. She told me I only should put eye cream in that area because it is too delicate for sunscreen. Doesn't the skin around eye especially need sun protection? Please advise--I thought I was giving that area extra protection against wrinkles --was I doing more harm than good?
Answer: Putting sunscreen around the eyelids is totally fine. I would agree with you 100%. You want to protect your eyes as well as the rest of your face. You would be doing more good than harm.
Q4. Do you know if most sunscreens are "non-comedogenic,"(NOTE - Comedogenic means Acne producing) or do they usually block pores and make oily skin worse? Thanks
Answer: Some are non-comedogenic, others are not. Read labels carefully. They can make oily skin oilier and block pores if they contain oil.
