Ask The Dentist - Dr. Marsha Pyle

Anonymous asks:
I have only 7 teeth on the bottom and a partial plate, which I take out at night. It seems like there is a space developing between two teeth. Should I keep the plate in at night to prevent the space from widening?

A. Partials and dentures should be removed at night to give the oral tissues a rest. If you notice spaces developing between the teeth it may indicate that there could be a gum problem. I would recommend that you see a dentist for an evaluation. A check-up is advisable every 6 months. This way the dentist can assess why the teeth may be shifting.

Fred from Bay Village asks:
How do you feel about electric toothbrushes and some of these new gadgets they have for massaging gums etc.?

A.Some of the newer products that include electric and sonic toothbrushes can be very helpful, especially for individuals who have arthritis or other difficulties with strength in the hands. If an individual doesn't have such reasons to need these products they can still be a convenience for brushing. It remains that using a manual tooth brush is just as good, if you take the time to do an adequate job.

Anonymous from Cleveland asks:
My teeth have yellowed over the years. What about bleaching or other approaches to whitening the teeth? Are they safe? Are they effective?

A.Bleaching of the teeth is a safe, effective way to whiten teeth that have a yellow color. Although there are some products that you could buy at the drug store, seeing your dentist for an evaluation of the appropriateness of this procedure for you as an individual is best. The dentist can then prescribe a product and process that will be monitored. It is best to have this procedure done with supervision by the dentist. The results can be quite remarkable.
